Nowhere in the promotional descriptions for Quicken Starter Edition is it explained that Quicken Starter Edition does not support 'Tags.' Tags are an essential part of using Quicken effectively, so basically Starter Edition is pretty useless. I had used Quicken for many years, and quit a few years ago. At that time 'Tags' were called 'Classes.' I assumed that, in starting to use Quicken again, I could use this feature (Tags) in Starter Edition.
Unfortunately, I downloaded Quicken Starter Edition from Amazon, and Amazon does not offer a refund on a downloaded copy of Quicken. I spent two days trying to find 'Tags' on Starter Edition and could not find it. Finally, in a 3rd party forum on Quicken, I learned that Starter Edition does not support 'tags.' So, I have wasted my money on the Amazon download of Starter Edition, though I have only had it for two days.
I will now have to buy Quicken Deluxe, even though I just bought Starter Edition. It would be helpful if Intuit would be more precise in promotional descriptions about this very crucial difference between Starter Edition and Deluxe.

How to unlock additional features If you want to, you can activate the Deluxe (or other higher level) features in your already installed Starter Edition software directly. There's no need to go out and buy a new Quicken CD or download. Simply follow the instructions here: The cost for this 'upgrade' should be the price difference between feature levels. Please do remember to retain any emails or instructions that you receive. You will need them again should ever have to reinstall from the original Quicken CD (or saved downloaded installation file) so that you can re-unlock the higher feature level. Thanks, UKR, for your prompt reply. I did go to the web page you pointed me to and I followed its instructions to refer to the Help menu in Quicken Starter Edition.
The Help drop down list does show'additional features' however, none of the additional features listed are 'Tags.' So, I wonder if upgrading to Quicken Deluxe will actually provide support for 'Tags.' Or do I need to upgrade to Quicken Premier? It's curious to me that since Tags are such an essential feature to tracking spending, that it is not an integral part of all Quicken versions. And, Splasher, thanks for your suggestion that I can get a refund on Quicken Starter Edition from Intuit. Actually, I had read that was possible, but it seemed like a really cumbersome procedure, with Intuit mailing me a check some 4-5 weeks down the road.
Possibly, I will try that route, or try the online upgrade. I just regret buying the download from Amazon. In the future, it seems the most efficient way to get any version of Quicken is to buy a download directly from Intuit. I'm assuming that would insure that I would download the latest 'update,' and I could deal directly with Intuit, AND, my copy should be automatically registered with Intuit. Does that make sense? @Bill Phillips Deluxe definitely has Tags: The only problem with buying from Quicken is that it is never as cheap as what you can get it at Amazon.
Regarding downloads, IMO, they are the preferred method, if you do have to get a refund, there is nothing to send back. The one disadvantage of buying the upgrade via the Help menu is that it relies on an unlock key which you may have trouble with at a later date if you need to re-install Quicken. IMO, you want a download or boxed CD that does not require anything extra (such as unlock code).
Never use the marketing CD sent out like coasters since they require an unlock code also. And presumably, this all goes out the window next year with Quicken '2018', or whatever they want to call it.
Is leaning toward an annual subscription product where you will be downloading any and all updates anyways. And if your subscription lapses, you will be locked out of downloading any transactions AND you will be unable to manually add any transactions or security prices. Essentially, you will be frozen in time as of the date of your lapsed subscription. Ask the folks using Quicken Canada how much their liking that model.

Quicken sprung it on them first as a group of guinea pigs. Thanks, thanks, to all these very helpful replies. This is the most responsive, courteous, and helpful forum I have ever visited, and I have been on many: Microsoft, Lenovo, Google, etc.
I am aware that most subscription software is going toward an annual renewal, which is why I quit Quickbooks when it stopped downloading my bank transactions unless I renewed. But, the big powerful software companies are able to do this if there is no adequate alternative. And, as I understand it, there is not really another company that offers a bookeeping program that can compete with Quicken. And, I remember the days when I kept all my financial records with pencil and paper and made numerous mistakes adding up columns, then handed it all over to an accountant to do my taxes.
So, actually the annual cost of renewing Quicken is probably worth it. I figure they know that. I knew my way around Qucken and Quickbooks very well 10 years ago, but I lost my focus and have not kept good records for several years. Now that I have come back to it, I realize it is very hard to catch up. It changes so fast from year to year. Let me add that for most of my life I have kept very poor financial records, and going back to Quicken at the age of 72 is probably my last chance for financial clarity.
Thanks again to all who replied here. Since this post was about 'Tags' and 'Starter Edition,' I will stop with this post and create other posts on other topics.
It did not produce the correct result. After I download the QFM software from the 'My Account' page, I see in the Desktop directory that it has a size of 79.4 MB on disk, created April 25, 2017 at 2:30PM, and modified March 20, 2018 at 7:48PM. I am not convinced that I am downloading the correct software. Alternatively, is it possible that my purchase of upgraded membership is simply not committed in the user database (if, indeed, they have one)?
Perhaps I am awaiting the wrong result. After I drop the.dmg file in the Applications folder, I expect that I should see 'About Quicken' return 'Quicken 2018 for Mac, Deluxe edition'. And the start of all this was the desire to track my shiny new 401(k).
And that does not work. Is there an alternative place from which I can download the deluxe edition?? Gus, Let me go over some basics. (Apologies is this is info you already know.) The Quicken.dmg file is not the application. It is a compressed disk image that contains the application.
When you open the Quicken.dmg file (by double clicking it), you should see this window: You need to drag the Quicken.app icon in this window to the Applications icon to install Quicken. When you do this, since you already have a version of Quicken installed, you should get a message asking if you want to replace the current version. You should choose Replace. Also, you must be logged in to an admin account on the Mac.
After doing this successfully, launch Quicken and click menu Quicken About Quicken. You should see a window like this, with 'Deluxe' where mine says 'Premier': If you are still seeing 'Starter', then it sounds like your account has not been upgraded. If that's the case, you will need to contact by calling the phone number in the About Quicken window. Thanks, Rick. Good try but that didn't work either.
Go to quicken.com/my-account Sign in sign out Sign in again highlight the 'Download quicken', right-click and select 'Copy link location' open notepad and paste link location, open new browser and attempt to navigate to the file. Failed /mac - Failed - Succeeded But there is no checksum, no MD-5 digest to verify, no way to know if the file I am trying to download is the correct file or some altered creation that will never work. The actual downloadd itself goes very rapidly.
Almost as if, after the first megabyte or so, the download utility recognizes that it has done this before, stops the download, and drags the previous copy out of a cache somewhere. (This is Firefox 59.0.2, 64-bit) I don't where or if that cache is. The complication is that while quicken support is open, I'm at work.
My quicken installation is at home. The peculiarities of my job don't allow personal electronic devices in the workplace. I'll continue to pursue. So, it appears the issue has been resolved and I am now able to start using Quicken for Mac 2018 Deluxe edition. It appears that my purchase of Deluxe edition did not process completely, leaving me with 'Deluxe edition' label but an account that we still tagged for Started edition. The successful technique was to cancel the membership and subsequently re-create the membership.
Then it was a matter of removing artifact.dmg files, closing the quicken app and removing the unwanted quicken app from the applications folder.
